Cappadocia South Tour

The South Tour is the active version of a Cappadocia day tour. You’ll hike a 1–2 km section of Red Valley, climb Uchisar Castle, and descend into Kaymakli Underground City. The route covers the southern Göreme region — different scenery, more light walking, and (because of that) fewer crowds than the central tours.

Why this tour

If you’d rather walk through Cappadocia than drive past it, this is the route. The Red Valley hike is the highlight — you walk along the canyon floor under cliffs that turn pink and orange in midday light, past rock-cut churches and pigeon dovecotes. The day combines this with two iconic sites (Pigeon Valley overlook and Uchisar Castle) and one of Cappadocia’s two famous underground cities (Kaymakli).

The route

9:00 AM — Pickup. Driver and guide collect you from your hotel.

Cavusin Village (45 min). A photogenic village on the way to Red Valley, partially built into the cliffside. The 5th-century Church of St. John the Baptist sits above the modern village — one of the oldest churches in Cappadocia. Short walk and photo time.

Red Valley Hike (75–90 min, 1.5–2 km). The day’s main event. You hike a flat section of the Red Valley floor, with the rust-colored cliffs rising on both sides. Multiple Byzantine rock-cut churches are along the route — your guide unlocks the iron gates that protect them so you can see the surviving frescoes (11th–13th century, mostly figurative scenes from Christian iconography). The hike is flat but the surface is mixed (dirt, gravel, occasional steps).

Lunch (75 min). Set menu at a local restaurant in Avanos or near the Pigeon Valley area.

Pigeon Valley Overlook (30 min). A panoramic viewpoint above the valley named for the hundreds of small dovecotes carved into the cliff face. The dovecotes were used for centuries to collect pigeon droppings as fertilizer for Cappadocia’s vineyards. Photo time.

Uchisar Castle (45 min). The highest point in Cappadocia. A massive single rock outcropping with hundreds of rooms, tunnels, and chambers carved into it — used as a Byzantine fortress against Arab raids. About 100 steps to reach the upper platform. The 360° view from the top is one of the best in the region.

Kaymakli Underground City (60 min). One of the two famous Cappadocia underground cities (the other is Derinkuyu, on our Green Tour). 4 levels open to visitors; used by early Christians to hide from raids. Wider and more horizontal than Derinkuyu — easier to navigate. Stables, churches, kitchens, ventilation shafts, rolling-stone doors. Helmets provided.

What to bring

Sturdy walking shoes (the Red Valley hike has loose volcanic gravel — running shoes work, hiking shoes are better). Layers — temperatures vary by 10–15°C between the canyon floor and the high overlooks. Hat and sunglasses for summer; warm coat for winter. Water bottle (we provide bottled, but bring a refillable one). A small backpack for your camera.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is the Red Valley hike? Moderate. The path is flat for most of the route but the surface is loose volcanic gravel that can be slippery. The hike is 1.5–2 km — about 30–40 minutes of walking — with multiple stops. Reasonably fit guests handle it well. Children 8+ usually do fine. Strollers do not work in the valley.

What if I can’t do the hike? Tell your guide. We can drop you at the Cavusin village viewpoint with the driver while the group hikes, then pick you up at the other end. You’ll see the valley from the rim — different perspective but still scenic.

How is Kaymakli different from Derinkuyu? Both are underground cities a few km apart. Derinkuyu is deeper (8 levels going down 60m). Kaymakli is wider and more horizontal (4 levels but spread out). Easier to navigate, less claustrophobic. The South Tour visits Kaymakli; the Green Tour visits Derinkuyu.

Is the Uchisar Castle climb hard? Moderate. About 100 steps to the upper platform with handrails. Skippable if mobility is limited — the view from the lower level is also good.

What’s the difference between this tour and the Red Valley Sunset Hike? Different times, different intensities. The South Tour visits Red Valley as one stop on a 6-stop full-day route. The Sunset Hike (on cappadociasunset.com) is a 3-4 hour evening tour focused entirely on Red Valley with the golden-hour light. Many guests do both — the South Tour during the day for the broader picture, the Sunset Hike for the photogenic finale.

How crowded does Red Valley get? Less than Goreme Museum or Pasabag. Most tour buses skip the canyon floor in favor of the rim viewpoints, so the hike itself is usually quiet.

Can I do this with limited mobility? The hike is the limiting factor. If you can walk 2 km on uneven ground, you can do this tour. If not, the Highlights or Mix Tour is a better fit — same culture/geology, less walking.
