Cappadocia Green Tour

This tour is the deep-cut version of Cappadocia. While the standard day tours focus on the central Göreme region, the Green Tour covers the wilder southern edge — the deepest underground city, the longest river canyon, and a monastery so big it’s been mistaken for a Star Wars set. Expect more driving (1+ hour each way to Ihlara Valley) and more walking (3–4 km along the river), in exchange for fewer crowds and bigger landscapes.

The route

9:00 AM — Pickup. Driver and guide collect you from your hotel.

Esentepe Panoramic Viewpoint (30 min). The first stop is a high overlook with the Göreme valley spread beneath you. From this point you can see the fairy chimneys, ancient cave dwellings, and rock formations from a distance — your guide uses the view to explain Cappadocia’s geological story before you descend into it.

Derinkuyu Underground City (75 min). The deepest of Cappadocia’s underground cities — 8 levels open to visitors (originally 18+ levels), going down 60 meters. Used by early Christians from the 7th century onward to hide from Arab raids. The complex includes a stable for animals, a church, a school, kitchens, wine cellars, ventilation shafts, and rolling-stone doors that could seal entire levels. Helmets provided. Some passages are narrow and low-ceiling — claustrophobic guests should consider stopping at level 2 or 3 (your guide will accompany you back up while the group continues).

Lunch at Ihlara Valley (75 min). A riverside restaurant inside the canyon. Tables are set on a wooden platform over the Melendiz river — the water comes from underground springs and runs cold even in summer. Anatolian set menu: salad, lentil soup, a main (grilled trout from the river is a popular option, or a vegetarian alternative), dessert, tea.

Ihlara Valley Walk (90 min, 3–4 km). This is the centerpiece. The Ihlara Valley is a 14-km canyon carved by the Melendiz over millennia. We walk a 3–4 km flat section through the most scenic part — you walk along the river under poplars, with the canyon walls rising 100m on both sides. Multiple Byzantine rock-cut churches are carved into the canyon walls; we visit two with surviving frescoes.

Selime Monastery (60 min). At the end of the canyon, the largest religious complex in Cappadocia. Carved into a single massive rock outcropping, it includes a cathedral, multiple chapels, a kitchen, stables, and dwelling cells — a complete monastic settlement in stone. Selime was a station on the Silk Road and operated until the 16th century. The view from the upper level is one of the best in Cappadocia.

What to bring

Comfortable walking shoes — the canyon walk is flat but the surface is mixed (dirt, rocks, occasional steps). Layers: it can be 5–10°C cooler in the canyon than on the plateau. Hat and sunglasses for the open sections. A small backpack for your camera and water. We provide bottled water; bring a refillable bottle if possible.

Frequently asked questions

Is the canyon walk strenuous? No — flat path along the river, 3–4 km, with no significant climbing. The only stairs are at the start (descending into the canyon, ~150 steps) and at Selime (climbing up to the upper levels — optional). Most reasonably mobile guests handle it well.

I’m claustrophobic — can I skip Derinkuyu? Yes. The upper 2 levels are open and well-lit; many guests stop there. Or you can wait outside with the driver if you’d rather skip entirely. Tell your guide in the morning so they can plan.

How does this compare to the Highlights Tour? Highlights = central Cappadocia, more sites in less driving (Devrent, Pasabag, Goreme Museum). Green = southern Cappadocia, fewer but bigger sites, more walking, more dramatic landscapes (Ihlara canyon, Selime monastery). If you have two days, do both. If you have one, choose Green for landscape, Highlights for variety.

Will the trout at lunch be fresh? Yes — the restaurant has a holding tank fed by the river, and trout is caught fresh. If you don’t eat fish, the chicken and vegetarian options are equally good.

Can children do this tour? Children 8+ usually enjoy the canyon walk and the underground city. Younger children may struggle with the walking distance. Strollers don’t work in the canyon — narrow paths and steps.

Is photography allowed inside the underground city? Yes, including flash. Many of the chambers are dim — bring a phone with a good night mode if you want better photos.

What’s the difference between Derinkuyu and Kaymakli? Both are underground cities a few km apart. Derinkuyu is deeper (8 levels vs Kaymakli’s 4); Kaymakli is wider and more horizontal. The Green Tour visits Derinkuyu. The South Tour visits Kaymakli. Different feel — Derinkuyu has the “going down” experience, Kaymakli is more “spread out.”

The lunch venue is selected for its riverside seating, not for the kickback.
