Cappadocia Red Tour

The Red Tour is the most-booked day tour in Cappadocia. It hits the central region’s most famous sites — fairy chimneys, frescoed churches, a working pottery, and a complete preserved cave village — in a single full day with one of our licensed guides. If it’s your first time in the region and you want a balanced introduction, this is the tour to start with.

Why “Red”?

The naming follows a Cappadocia tour-industry convention: “Red” routes cover the central Göreme/Avanos region (named for Red Valley, the iconic location), while “Green” routes cover the southern Ihlara Valley region. The Red Tour does not actually visit Red Valley itself — that’s covered by our Sunset Hike. The Red Tour visits central Cappadocia’s flagship sites.

The route

9:00 AM — Pickup. Driver and guide collect you from your hotel.

Devrent Valley (45 min). “Imagination Valley.” Volcanic erosion has shaped rocks into unusual figures — a camel, a Virgin and Child, a snake. Easy valley-floor walk with photo time.

Pasabag (60 min). Mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys with iconic protective rock caps. The chapel of St. Simeon Stylites the Younger, a 5th-century hermit, is carved into one of the chimneys and open to visitors.

Avanos & Pottery Workshop (90 min, including lunch). The pottery town. You visit a working family studio, see the kick wheel and kiln in operation, and watch the master throw a pot from start to finish. Optional hands-on. Lunch at a riverside restaurant — Anatolian set menu.

Zelve Open-Air Museum (60 min). A complete preserved cave village — homes, churches, monasteries, a mosque — used continuously from the 9th century until 1952. Three valleys connected by tunnels. Surviving post-iconoclastic frescoes (rare in Cappadocia, where most churches are iconoclastic-era plain). One of the most distinctive sites in the region.

Goreme Open Air Museum (75 min). UNESCO Heritage. The most important monastic complex in Cappadocia — 30+ rock-cut churches, refectories, and dwellings carved by Byzantine monks between the 4th and 13th centuries. Frescoed churches include the Apple Church (Elmalı Kilise), Buckle Church (Tokalı Kilise), and Snake Church (Yılanlı Kilise). Turkish Carpet Workshop (45 min). A short visit to a working weaving cooperative. You see the looms, watch weavers at work, and learn about hand-knotted vs. kilim, wool vs. silk. No buying pressure.

What to bring

Comfortable walking shoes. Layers — Cappadocia mornings are cool. Hat and sunglasses for summer; warm coat for winter. Camera or phone. Water bottle (we provide bottled, but a refillable one is more convenient).

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the Highlights Tour? Highlights = Devrent, Pasabag, Avanos pottery, Özkonak Underground City, Goreme Museum (no carpet). Red = Devrent, Pasabag, Avanos pottery, Zelve, Goreme Museum, carpet workshop (no underground city). Red is more cultural; Highlights is more historical. Both are excellent first-day choices.

Is Zelve worth the visit? Yes — many guests describe Zelve as their favorite stop on the Red Tour. It’s larger and wilder than Goreme Museum, less crowded, and gives a fuller sense of how Cappadocian communities actually lived. Bring good walking shoes — the terrain is mixed.

Will the carpet workshop pressure me to buy? No. The workshop we use has transparent pricing, explains the craft properly, and treats non-buyers normally. Many groups leave without purchasing.

Can I do this tour as a private booking? Yes — private rates available for 1–8 people. Lets you adjust pace and skip stops you don’t want.

Is there a Cappadocia Red Valley sunset tour? Yes, separately. Our Red Valley Sunset Hike is on cappadociasunset.com and is operationally independent of this day tour. Many guests do the Red Tour during the day and the Red Valley Sunset Hike in the evening.

What’s lunch like? Anatolian set menu: salad, soup, main course (lamb, chicken, or vegetarian), dessert, tea. Drinks not included. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and halal can be accommodated with notice.

How walking-heavy is it? Moderate. Total walking is around 5 km across the day, never more than 1.5 km at any single stop. Mostly flat terrain. Reasonably mobile guests find it easy.
